I could care less what Harry Reid said in reference to Barack Obama, what interests me most is the response it has engendered among both the left and the right.
The left has reacted, as they usually do, with the kind of arrogant, we-don’t-have-to-answer-to-anyone attitude. In fact, in characteristic manner, Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) thinks that an apology, made by Reid to Obama, should be the end of it and everyone should get over it. Hmmm, I bet she did not adopt that kind of forgiving heart to Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) when he yelled “you lie” at President Obama during a speech. It seemed like the entire left-leaning political universe was screaming for Wilson’s immediate dismissal, even though Wilson, too, apologized to Obama. Not to mention, there was nothing racist in a “you lie” comment, contrary to columnist Maureen Dowd’s assertion Joe Wilson is a racist, whereas Reid’s comment could easily be construed as racist. So it seems the left screams bloody murder when one of the opposition does something they don’t like (which is everything) and demands apologies and discipline.
On the other side of the political spectrum, calls for Harry Reid’s resignation abound. Michael Steele, RNC Chairman called for Reid to step down as majority leader much the same way Senator Trent Lott stepped down for his comments about Strom Thurmond’s approach to government. Not quite a call for complete dismissal like the left’s reaction to Wilson, but a mild example of the right’s point of view. Of course the right (particularly Rush Limbaugh) has been calling for Reid’s resignation for a long time based on the way Reid has handled the whole health care process in the Senate. On Twitter, the talk among the right is that Reid should resign because he is racist and evil and perhaps the GOP might then land a new seat in the Senate a little early?
Calls for Reid’s resignation by some of the more extreme right are rather strange, considering that the target of Reid’s comments is the very person (Obama) they despise.
None of the “righteous indignation” on either side is a result of moral or ethical standards, it’s all about gaining the political upper hand. Everyone is quick to grab anything that can be used as a weapon to bludgeon their opponent. But I’ve got an idea, resignation isn’t a bad idea, it’s just that…..
Harry Reid Resign? Congress Should Resign!
Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid (D-NV)
Amidst the constant hub-bub of finger pointing and name calling, the recent revelation that Harry Reid (D-NV), the Senate Majority Leader, referred to President Obama as a “light skinned” black man who didn’t speak with the “negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one”, came roiling to the surface. Those comments came to light after a yet-to-be released book about the 2008 presidential campaign was obtained by the AP and Reid’s comments revealed.
